The world behind our food

On Wednesday, October 14, the KeileCollectief in Rotterdam is hosting a discussion with Ruud Sies, Rob Hornstra, and Kadir van Lohuizen. All three have spent years working on photography projects centered on food production. From various locations and through their own unique perspectives, they have revealed what lies behind the food we eat every day.

The event is inspired by *Good Food*, a book and exhibition by photographer and filmmaker Ruud Sies and creative producer Hanneke van Hintum. Since 2017, they have been collaborating on *Resilience Food Stories*. Across 22 countries and five continents, they met farmers, growers, and scientists seeking ways to produce food in harmony with nature. Ruud captured their work, environments, and personal stories through photography and film.

Rob Hornstra, together with writer and filmmaker Arnold van Bruggen, focused on the vast greenhouse farming region in southeastern Spain. Their project, *Plastic Sea, Perfect Storm*, explores the world behind the “vegetable garden of Europe.” For *Food for Thought*, Kadir van Lohuizen documented the food industry, tracing everything from Dutch production chains to locations elsewhere in the world.

The three projects reveal different facets of the same subject.

During the evening, the photographers will discuss their research, the encounters they experienced along the way, and the choices they made to visually convey complex stories.

Hanneke van Hintum will also participate in the discussion. Jeroen Kummer, the designer of all three photobooks, will speak about the role of the book in conveying these stories. Ahmet Polat will moderate the evening. Wednesday, 14 October 2026
